GENERAL COMMENT ABOUT BLACKBERRIES: Fruit - raw, cooked or dried for later use. A pleasant sweet and somewhat spicy flavour. Young shoots - raw. They are harvested in the spring, peeled and used in salads.(1) ...blackberries will mold within a couple of days of picking if not refrigerated. Do not wash until time of use because that, too, promotes mold....Picked unripe berries will not ripen...2-3 year plants.(2)

CAUTION:

NUTRITION/MEDICINAL: Roots. Leaves. Bark.  Antihaemorrhoidal;  Antirheumatic;  Astringent;  Diuretic;  Ophthalmic;  Stimulant;  TB;  Tonic.(1)

Black berries are also a good source of potassium, phosphorus, iron, and calcium. The seeds have Omega 3 and 6 fatty acids.(2)

LOOK-A-LIKES:  It looks like others in the raspberry family, except the fruit of a black raspberry has a solid white core, rather than being hollow, as with raspberries.  Also, the cane (stem or branch) is smooth and ridged like celery, instead of round as with raspberries or fuzzy as with wineberries.

POISONOUS LOOK-A-LIKES:

OTHER USES: Dye. A purple to dull blue dye is obtained from the fruit.(1)
